| So much has been said and written about George Washington over the last 200 years that it is almost impossible to canonize him further. What more needs to be said? His legacy says it all. He was the greatest president, statesman, serviceman, and American this country has ever seen. Over two centuries later, his excellence still knows no rival. As a student of history, the foundation of the United States has always been a fascinating subject to me. The more I learn about the great Founding Fathers of our nation, the more I marvel at their unparalleled wisdom and foresight as to what can and should make a country great. The success of the United States of America becomes less surprising when one studies the theories, philosophies and attitudes of the people who laid the foundations for this great union. Yet I never gave much thought to doing a series on the Founding Fathers because I assumed that, over the last two centuries, surely these men would have been immortalized in every conceivable way time and again. Out of curiosity one day, I began to look for such works and to my surprise found that they were almost non-existent in modern art. While many paintings exist from long ago masters, I couldn’t find even one contemporary sketch portrait and hardly a recent piece in any medium. The lack of attention given to these men in recent years struck a cord with me. I began to think about the vast gulf between the vision these men had for this great land and the realities of what it has today become. It no longer seems a surprise that our founders have not been the focal point of artistic remembrance in recent years; their ideals, principles and vision for America have not been the focal point of remembrance in recent years. I believe this is very worth trying remedy. That day a desire seize upon my heart to do a series on the Fathers of America; to revive in our current time an awareness of their noble precepts. These men need to be remembered as more than just dead people who signed old documents. They should be remembered as the truest and purest examples of American patriotism we could ever hope to glean knowledge from. This series is about bringing these men back to their rightful place in American history -- to the forefront -- and with them, a restored awareness of their grand vision for this land. |
